I've only gotten take-out from this restaurant. The food has been really good. Typical breakfast food but it's made with care. The inside is a bit beat down and could use some updating. But honestly, the good food overshadows that!

Seriously, what is happening here? The inside of Cal's looks like someone threw up a garage sale. Which I suppose could be considered cozy and quaint if the food were scrumptious, but that my friends, it is not. It's sub-standard fare offered with friendly service (the service is the only reason I went two stars instead of one). I ordered the super veggie omelette...the eggs tasted like they were powdered, or at least watered down to make them go farther. Light and fluffy they were not. And the cheese! It was runny, like sauce. Who puts cheese sauce in omelettes? No one I want to get to close to, that's for sure. It came with potatoes that had a strange smelling seasoning on them and toast dowsed in butter. The coffee was good, I'll give Cal's that. And that's all I'm giving.

Considering the sign out front states it was voted "best breakfast" by RI Monthly, I'm not sure that I agree. It was incredibly cheap, the staff was friendly, and the food was OK, but it was nothing to write home about. The decor is somewhat scary. We went early enough that it wasn't crowded, but by the time we left, it was packed. Perhaps the rest of the patrons know something I don't?
(2)Victor S.
Staff is nice, the food is good, and the price isn't bad. Only issue is when I ask for my home fries well done and crispy they don't really do it
(4)Maura C.
mmmm....basic cheap breakfast, close to home!

Excellent breakfast

Love Cal's. My family and I go there on a regular basis for breakfast. Just have to try to time it right between the church crowds on Sundays. The food varies depending on who is cooking, but its always decent. The waitstaff is friendly and tend to remember you. Quirky posters and decorations on the wall keep you entertained while waiting on your food. Great place...hope to continue visiting for years to come.

great breakfast diner. huge omlets and pancakes and orders of home fries. not to expensive bill for 5 was 33$. very good. similar to admiral spa but much better.

Walking into Cal's I felt like I was walking into a different era. Old pictures on the wall, a map with pins that represent where different people are from who have eaten there, and a friendly owner that greets you like family. They just celebrated 30 years and I can see why! The food is not fancy, its your classic diner style breakfast. I got an omelet. They are huge so I decided to get the 1/2 and that was more than plenty. I also had to try the peanut butter and jelly pancake which is amazing but I am glad I only got one I feel like it would be too sweet to eat more than that. On top of this our meal was out in about 5 minutes. I was very satisfied with my experience at Cal's. If the food and the service continue to be great on future visits, I think I have found my breakfast place to become a regular at. Give it a shot! Just an FYI its a cash only place.

Yay for finding a local diner that not only plays Frank Sinatra while you're eating but has some good ol' homestyle grub to enjoy! I found this place by chance and walked in. The waitresses and staff have that local Rhodie feel but that's what makes it so endearing. They treat you like you're family the moment you walk in the door and are fun and kind. My daughter and I ordered and within three minutes we had our food. THREE MINUTES. Again, THREE MINUTES. It was quite possibly the fastest turnaround time for food that I've ever had. There were quite a few people there too! Impressive. They only lose a star for not accepting credit cards (but they do have an ATM with a $2.50 charge inside if you're not carrying cash). I will definitely return and am happy to find a local family-owned diner nearby.

This is a great local spot for me - I've lived down the street from this place for the past 8 years and it's an awesome place to stop in for a quick bite to eat. The dining area is very small, and this place can get busy - but if there is a wait, it's usually not for too long. The wait staff are friendly and sassy. They make you feel like family. My roommate and I had stopped in here one early Christmas Eve morning, ordered our coffee and the waitress was walking around with a bottle of Sambucca for anyone who wanted a shot in their coffee. Um, okay! The food is great and comes out very quickly. It's not gourmet fancy pants food - it's straight up home cookin', which I love. The prices - unbeatable! If you order an omelet, beware - it's HUGE. They do offer half orders as well for those of us who can't down 6 eggs, plus bacon, plus toast plus home fries in one sitting. Also, there is plenty of interesting decor all over the walls of this place to admire while you wait for your food. P.S. - CASH ONLY!

I'm am going to have to go with my fellow Elite crew's reviews on this one. I so wanted Cal's to live up to the flapping white sign out front.. "RI Monthly - Best Breakfast in RI". Upon reading the cover of their menu, which I am assuming has not changed since this honor was bestowed on them... I discovered that it was voted Best Breakfast in 2001. Yeah, time to take the sign down. Or change it to merely "Breakfast in RI". What can I say, Innovative.. no not really..exciting food... nope, not that either...I guess the only phrase to descrive it is just your average run of the mill diner breakfast, which I think is exactly what they are going for. I mean, even staples like Eggs Benedict was too edgy to make it on their menu. The food is good, simple, eggs, toast, homefries, pancakes and some omelets. So why have I been here twice now in the last couple of weeks.. A. Its around the corner from my house. B. Its cheap C. The coffee is decent D. The 1/2 frittata, or 1/2 omelet is plenty.. no need to go anywhere near the full orders E. The place had that real diner feel.. surly waitresses, family run business kind of place... and thats what sold me on the third star, even as I was writing this review. I had it at 2 and changed my own mind with that one statement. They are nice people who treat the people that come in and eat like family, and in this day and age, that is hard to come by, so while they may not be doing 18 different kinds of hash like Julians, you also don't leave wanting to strangle every hip, pretentious member of their staff. So for simple breakfast and a warm smile I'd gladly recommend Cal's if your taking a ride to North Providence anyways... if your not, there's probably a place just like it around the corner from where ever you live. Oh, and Cal's, if your reading this.. please expand your cheese choices beyond american and provolone.. would it kill ya to buy some cheddar or swiss.
(3)Matt S.
Decent little breakfast place. Few places I know that offer fresh made frittatas. Food was good. Staff was very nice. Offered quite the selection of food for such a small place. Only bout 12 to 15 tables.
(4)Sergio M.
The quality went downhill big time here over the years. There is no way I'd have breakfast at Cal's again.
(1)Joie S.
I really like Cal's. I don't love it, but I definitely like it enough to hit it up a few times a month, partly because I can walk to it from my apartment and partly because the pumpkin pancakes are delicious. I love that its small and it feels like everyone knows everyone else. The staff treats you like family and the food tastes like my mom just made it in our kitchen. It's a solid breakfast, it's not gourmet but it's affordable and pretty tasty.
(3)Sarah B.
Excellent homestyle cooking! I got the eggs benedict with home fries, and it was delicious. Our waitress was also really nice, and prompt. My only complaint is the till system is a little old fashioned. They only recently began accepting credit and debit cards, and it took a lot of written-out math for them to figure out how to split the bill. Now we know for next time to tell them up front if we're splitting!
(4)Shannon B.
I wanted to like Cal's. I really did. It's local (walking distance from my house), and I believe in supporting small businesses. The place is a cash-only time warp. Every surface is sticky, all of the condiments come in single-serve packets from Restaurant Depot, and the jam and coffee sweeteners are rationed. Seriously? Seriously. My mom ordered a coffee and a refill, and had to beg the surly waitress to part with a couple packets of the pink stuff both times. The oft-raved about pancakes tasted like the eggs, which tasted like the homefries, which tasted like 3 layers of rancid bacon grease. The one bright spot is the owner, who plays triple duty as host, busser, and line cook. He is the owner of the only smile or socially presentable disposition in the joint. The banner outside proclaims that RI Monthly voted Cal's one of the top breakfast spots in RI. In 2011. Coincidentally, the last time the grease traps were cleaned. Ick.
(1)David R.
Brilliant breakfast! Gina and Richard are always welcoming. Always get a slice of baked ham!
(5)Nu I.
Wonderful little mom and pop place that has excellent breakfast foods. Since it's a breakfast place, they move people in and out pretty fast, so even when there is a wait, it's not very long. Great service, and the restaurant is always very clean.
(5)Stephanie R.
I'm shocked that I haven't written a review about Cal's yet! Based on my number of check-ins, one could probably gather that I come here often...Once a week to once every two weeks seems pretty accurate. Honestly, it's the service that keeps me coming back. The people that own and work at this restaurant are some of the nicest people ever. It doesn't hurt that the food is not only delicious, but well-priced and enormously portioned. Most of the time, I order my meals without the homefries (despite how delicious they are) simply because I 1. Overeat or 2. Don't even come close to finishing my meal. I've tried quite a few things here, but my go-to favorite is always either one of their omelets, or the usual eggs over easy. My boyfriend absolutely adores their Corned Beef Hash Omelet, which takes up it's own plate. Simply put: You want a good, quick breakfast, with excellent service, then Cal's is your place!
(5)T B.
Been here a few times and each time the food was better than the last. Even everyday muffins are delicious here. Good job Cals! A little outdated but gives off a old time favorite kinda vibe.
(4)Kelsey U.
Came in a few minutes before close, decided to head out but they stopped us and told us to stay. The owner Cal was awesome along with our waiter, service was great.. Food was even better! Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area :)
(5)Maryclaire H.
We first stumbled upon Cal's during our senior year at PC- three years too late! This place is just the greatest! Hands down- the best pancakes I've ever had. Light, fluffy and delicious and they always have some kind of pancake special. I'm a big fan of eggs too, so I always get eggs over easy, home fries, toast and a buttermilk pancake. (I know, gross amount of food in one sitting, but it's usually eaten around noon and keeps me full till dinner!) They have good coffee, friendly waitstaff and the place just makes you happy. I love all the eclectic decor on the walls and the mismatched coffee mugs. Makes it feel like home! I will say that it looks like they painted and cleaned up the walls a bit since I was there last, but the homey, family feel remains. Honestly, you can't go wrong Cal's! It's just the best breakfast around!
(5)Kristine R.
I've lived around the area for quite some time and have always wondered about this little corner breakfast stop. It a small modest little breakfast restaurant with a images along the walls that take you back to the 50s. The decor is unremarkable, but their food and service is awesome. The staff are welcoming, helpful, attentive and friendly. The food is made right when you order. They serve up the food right when it hits the plate. Great place to grab breakfast food for a quick-on-the-go run. I have even dropped by with the family, needing to head to work an hour from when I got there. The wait staff was incredibly considerate and reassured me I would get my order quick. And they did not disappoint! I had a filling brunch and made it to work on time! Ever since then, I come here often. Where else can you find a heaping portion of breakfast food and quick amazing service?
(4)Rachel D.
Cute place. Very small and family owned. One waitress for whole place, but she handled it well! I got the eggs Benedict special that came with home-fries, we didn't wait long at all! Came out within 2 min! And it was super delicious... Ate that up fast! Note- Cash only with an ATM inside.
(4)Mandy D.
I really wanted to like this place, so I'm sad to say that I really didn't. It's a cute old place with a lot of character, and family-run, friendly service. There's all kinds of movie posters and autographs on the walls, and the tables are surrounded by old captain's chairs. The vibe you get walking in is "old family place = good food." We were seated right away and got coffee... delicious coffee! But the creamer carafe was already on the table, and I wondered how long it had been there since we had come in pretty late for breakfast. I looked around the place and noticed that there was already cream on all of the tables. I get that this saves time, but it's kind of gross. We ordered the Italian French toast with fresh strawberries off of the specials menu, with a side of bacon. The waitress told us that they were out of fresh strawberries, but had frozen ones. That should have been a red flag, but I went for it anyway. The French toast was served with packets of butter and syrup right on the side of the plate. Yuck. The strawberries were also still half frozen, so they were like ice cubes and hard to chew. The toast was chewy, cold, and overall just not good. The bacon was okay, but it was the cheap kind that's really thin and brittle. $20 for a pretty gross, frozen breakfast. I think I'll pass next time.
(2)Daryl H.
My fiancé and I eat here like twice a week, waitstaff if friendly and attentive and the food is always great. We always go for breakfast and it's usually pretty busy, mostly locals and college kids. Nothing fancy just good food and good service, one of the few unchanged old school providence eating establishments! Try the eggs bennidict or any dish with their ham!
(5)Stephen D.
Without a doubt the best breakfast in Rhode Island and the staff is over the top friendly. Prices are good as well. To anything negative about this place one has to have a personal agenda to do so. Don't miss the opportunity to try this place out.
(5)Jason G.
Decent place for breakfast. Cash only is annoying but as long as you are aware beforehand. Standard fare for breakfast spots. Nice place to work off a hangover.
